What is Voice over IP (VoIP)?

Voice over IP is a technology that allows telephone service to share cabling with and utilize networking technology to lower costs and typically integrate with your computer systems. What does this mean?

Typically, phone systems require their own dedicated wiring systems which are completely separate from the wiring needed for your computer network. Using VoIP technology, both systems can utilize the same wiring, thereby lowering the initial cost of acquisition. In addition, VoIP technology can be used to make (and transfer) calls through the Internet (or any private IP based network), thereby greatly reducing or completely eliminating long distance charges. But the benefits don't stop there.

In addition, VoIP can be integrated with your Email systems and desktop computer systems, so that desktop telephones can be dialed with the click of a mouse, or phones routed to voicemail (or cell phones) automatically based on your Outlook calendar. Phone extensions can be provided for company users in their home offices, or road warriors without a PDA phone can call into their office and listen to both voicemail AND email. A VoIP system can even be set up to call customers on your behalf remind them-- a feature often used with dental and doctors' offices.
